Start with Presence

☐ Begin each shift with a deep breath and a positive intention.

☐ Make eye contact and greet residents and staff by name.

☐ Pause at least once a day to observe a joyful interaction happening naturally.

Celebrate the Small Wins

☐ Recognize at least one team member every day for something well done (big or small).

☐ Share “good news” moments during huddles or shift changes.

☐ Document small successes to highlight at staff meetings.

Create Resident Joy

☐ Share a laugh, story, or song with a resident.

☐ Encourage residents to participate in something meaningful (craft, walk, prayer, music).

☐ Ask residents about a happy memory and listen fully.

Encourage Team Connection

☐ Take 5 minutes for “human conversation” (non-work related) with staff.

☐ Express gratitude—say “thank you” often and sincerely.

☐ Support staff in balancing challenges with humor or kindness.

Spark Fun in the Day

☐ Add a lighthearted touch (play music, themed dress days, trivia questions).

☐ Bring in a small treat or note of encouragement for the team.

☐ Notice and join in when others are laughing or enjoying themselves.

Reflect & Recharge

☐ Journal or jot down 1 joyful moment at the end of the day.

☐ Share a joyful story with family, a colleague, or in your journal.

☐ Remind yourself why you chose senior care—return to your “why.”

Build Habits of Joy

☐ Keep a “joy jar” where team members can add notes of positive moments.

☐ Use staff meetings to reflect on joy, not just problems.

☐ Encourage peer-to-peer recognition to spread joy across shifts.
